Q. FTP Server Details
A. Your ftp server details are based on your domain name for example
ftp.mydomain.com
Q. POP3 Server Details (collecting mail)
A. Your POP3 server details are based on your domain name for example
pop3.mydomain.com
Q. SMTP Server Details (sending mail)
A. Your SMTP server details are based on your domain name for example
smtp.mydomain.com. However this service is not part of your basic
hosting package, but is normally offered by the ISP that you connect
to the Internet via.
Q. DNS Name Servers
A. The Internet addresses (often known as "IP addresses")
used by computers on the Internet to identify each other are pure
numbers (they serve a similar purpose to phone numbers), and are
rather difficult to remember. They are actually 4-byte (32-bit)
numbers, but are usually written in "dotted quad" form
- four numbers each in the range 0-255 separated by dots, such as
"217.65.164.6".
Numbers like this are not particularly easy to remember, so they
can be given associated domain names using the Domain Name System
(DNS). The DNS uses a distributed network of name servers which
allow your computer to convert between domain names and IP addresses,
in much the same way that directory enquiries can give you the phone
number belonging to a particular person.
This means that instead of having to remember a number such as "217.65.164.6"
you can use a name, such as "www.umis.net" - your TCP/IP
software automatically queries a name server to convert the domain
name to an IP address.
The UMIS.net Name Servers are
ns0.uk.umis.co.uk
ns1.uk.umis.net
ns2.uk.umis.net
ns3.uk.umis.co.uk
Q. How do you contact UMIS?
A. Click here for our contact details
Q. HTTPS - Secure Servers, what are they?
A. You will occasionally see 'Secure Server' referred to in WWW
pages. A secure server is usually used when confidential information
needs to be sent across the Internet. This information might be
password details to allow access to a system, or credit card or
other personal details which allow some sort of transaction to be
performed.
When a secure server is in use, the information is encrypted by
your WWW browser prior to sending it across the Internet. The information
can only be decoded by the host site which requested it. In the
unlikely event that anyone could intercept the information as it
crossed the Internet, it is practically impossible for them to break
the encryption.
Secure server URLs are usually denoted by the prefix 'https' as
opposed to 'http'.
If you are offered a choice between insecure and secure servers
we would suggest that you choose to use the secure server. We do
not recommend that you submit private or sensitive information over
the Internet to an insecure server. Current versions of all popular
browsers support secure server access.
Q. How can UMIS contact you?
A. When you set-up you service with us you must give us an e-mail
address, phone number and postage address by which we can contact
you. It is your responsibility to keep us informed if any of these
change.
Q. What is an Acceptable Use Policies (AUP)
or Net Abuse Policy (NAP)?
A. Some networks over which you may be connecting have Acceptable
Use Policies (AUPs) or Net Abuse Polices (NAPs) and it is your duty
to be aware of these and respect them. UMIS.net has it's own NAP
which can be view here.
Q. What is email filtering?
A. Email filtering is the identifying of unwanted email or "spam"
on the mail servers before it reaches your mailbox. Spam wastes
time and energy that can be better spent sending and reading legitimate
email. It also frequently contains messages that many people find
offensive. For more information please see our information page
on Unsolicited Bulk Email.
Q. What is "spam"?
A. For information on spam please see our information page on Unsolicited
Bulk Email.
Q. What are the benefits of this email filtering
service?
A.
• Customers can opt in at any time.
• It will reduce the volume of unwanted email that arrives
in customers' mailboxes.
• It will reduce customer costs and frustration in manually
filtering email.
Q. How much does this email filtering service
cost?
A. This service is free of charge.
Q. How accurate is this email filtering service?
A. No filtering system is 100% effective, and there is a very small
chance that a non-spam email will trigger a filtering rule by mistake.
However, it is up to you to decide at what spam rating you what
to bin the e-mail. See our information page on Unsolicited Bulk
Email for more details.
Q. How do I "opt in" to the email
filtering service?
A. Give our support team a call or e-mail them support@uk.umis.net
Q. Which products have email filtering?
A. All e-mail services can be provided with email filtering upon
request.
Q. Can I see which of my messages are being detected as spam?
A. Yes. As you decide what happens to e-mails that you consider
are spam you can delete them or simply move them into a spam folder.
Q. Why has the decision been made to introduce email filtering now?
A. We have been continuing to monitor the volume of spam affecting
Internet traffic and the solutions that have been emerging to address
it. We believe that it is now possible to provide a system that
will be effective and that will not have an adverse effect on customers'
legitimate email.
Q. Will you also be filtering outgoing email?
A. No. At this stage we have no plans to filter email sent out through
our relays.
