E-commerce, one of those buzz-words that
seem to have numerous definitions, quite simply if your online application
buys or sells anything then it comes under the category of e-commerce.
One of the most powerful benefits of the Internet is its ability
to promote and sell your products and services 24/7/365 worldwide,
yet simultaneously increase sales and revenue on a local level.
UMIS create your online store allowing customers to simply add items
to their personal shopping cart by clicking the button next to the
product/service image or description and proceeding to the checkout
to finalise their order. You collect your email / faxes on a regular
basis and there's the order, complete with shipping address, invoice
address and all the information you need to process the order. Credit
card information will be provided if you have chosen to use the
SSL secure server option to encrypt the information.
When building an e-commerce website you‘re probably also building
a long term partnership with your design company, allowing you to
make regular product updates, post out of stock notices and announce
special offers online. Alternatively, you may desire the autonomy
that an update
system provides you allowing you to make these changes
yourself. It is therefore important to choose a company or product
alternative that can act quickly and be flexible enough to move
with you.

Accepting Credit Cards
This can be confusing even if you are experienced
in business as there seem to be a plethora of options. A good starting
point is often to begin by contacting your bank, explain what it
is you are trying to do and then look at the options from there.
Ideally you will need a 'Merchant Account'.
This is the basic starting point for accepting credit card payments
manually. Some businesses however, may not be able to set up a Merchant
Account or they may need to process the transaction in 'real time'
in which case they will need to use one of the many online payment
processing companies, two of the larger players in the market being
www.worldpay.com and www.cybercash.com (acquired by VeriSign).
