Many of today's websites require more that
just a front end. Many of them interact with databases, e-mail,
sound, video and other external interfaces. Many of these do this
through CGI (Common Gateway Interface) and scripting languages like
ASP and PHP - similar to search engines - which search a database
of literally millions of web pages. Other uses include web-mail
web sites like Microsoft's Hotmail and e-commerce sites where the
user can add items of shopping to their virtual shopping basket
and then pay for them by credit card.
In our experience one of the most popular uses for scripts on a
web site are update systems. These allow you or your staff to keep
the information on your web site up to date without the need for
an experienced, and expensive, web programmer. Depending on how
often your site content needs changing, an update system can provide
considerable long term savings. For example, a news room would ideally
have a daily or weekly update, if a web designer charges every time
they make a change the site will quickly become economic unfeasible.
