How Firewalls Work
Firewalls restrict unauthorised access to and from a network, and
are therefore responsible for enforcing a security control policy
between networks by either denying or permitting traffic to pass
through it. It controls access by inspecting the identification
information associated with all communication attempts and compares
it to a rule-set consistent with a security policy, set by the security
administrator. The firewall’s configuration, as the mechanism
of enforcement, imposes the access/security policy on everything
behind it. Unfortunately, without a considerable idea of what kind
of access you wish to allow or deny, a firewall cannot effectively
protect you.
Firewalls
UMIS recommend various firewall systems dependant upon your specific
access and security policy requirements.
