Virus Protection
All organizations should have in place and implemented organization-wide
virus control measures. Blanketing your network with virus scanning
software will give you the greatest protect against viruses that
originate via disk drives, modems, and Internet. Rather than trying
to screen viruses out at the firewall, make sure that every vulnerable
desktop has virus scanning software that is run when a machine is
rebooted.
Virus Software
Available with UMIS services our virus scanning software provides
protection against all untrusted email data and coupled with a strong
firewall can prevent network and productivity compromise.
Viruses
A strong firewall – whilst ideal for preventing hacking -
is never a substitute for sensible software that recognizes the
nature of what it is handling, that is, untrusted data from an unauthenticated
party, and behaves appropriately. In general, a firewall cannot
protect against a data-driven attack - attacks in which something
is mailed or copied to an internal host where it is then executed.
This form of attack has occurred against various versions of sendmail,
and scripting mail user agents like OutLook. There are simply too
many ways of encoding binary files for transfer over networks, and
too many different architectures and viruses to try to search for
them all via the firewall. Failing to run virus protection software
and simply rely on your firewall is both courting disaster for your
network and business, and is also rather stupid.
